Sah
The forest never sleeps and the wolf never dies
Sah had been out tracking an ursur when Lilly froze. Ears perked forward the sudden flood of 'stop' in their bond had both the Abandoned and Pad freezing in their tracks. Eyes focused on a patch of grass near them, the silver wolf slowly stalked over before crouching low and wagging slightly.

Curious Sah approached only to pause, eyes going wide. Curled up in the grass just ahead of Lilly was a newborn luxere. The little creature blinked its eyes opened and let out a small bleat of fear. Sah found himself crouching down and letting out a soothing humming lullaby but didn't approach. From what he recalled in the journals at the Monster Hunter Guildhall, luxere enjoyed singing and had a tendency to avoid dark magic users such as himself.

Regardless, the little luxere was far too young to be alone and it made Sah worry just where its mom had gone. He wondered if the little one had wandered off and gotten lost.

It was as this thought occurred that he heard footsteps approaching. Glancing at Pad, the wolf went from hanging back to quickly turning to block whoever was coming. A flood affection came to the Abandoned for his perceptive pup.

Tal had dropped a package and letters off for Delia and Noah out at the Lodge and was on his way back towards the Citadel on the Peregrine when Boreal, flying alongside, nudged his mind and called his attention down to ground below. Two familiar shapes coursed through the green ferns and grasses below, one pale and one dark and a little ways behind them...

The courier grinned and brought the nimble little skyboat around and down in the wake of the hunter and his companions. He threw the ground anchor over the side, scampered down the rope ladder, and sent Boreal to glide ahead, guiding him. They headed towards where Sah had stopped. Pad's stiff-legged stalk was met with a gleeful ambush from his scaly aunt as the dragon folded her wings and dropped on him in a gleeful tackle.

Tal snorted at the antics and finally spoke up. "What're you lookin' for all the way out here, Jester?"

Sah
The forest never sleeps and the wolf never dies
Unlike when Boreal's surprise attacks would be met with reluctant fondness and false bravado, Pad's reaction was far more aggressive this time. Twisting, the wolf snapped his teeth at the dragon in warning and moved to block Tal from advancing further. Sensing his companion's ire, Sah urged him back through the bond. The wolf flicked an ear but turned to lead the courier and dragon to his bonded.

"Quiet, Errand Boy", Sah whispered as the other man got closer. "And sit down." The Abandoned never took his eyes off of the fawn as Lilly slowly slunk forward on her belly, rolling to flop onto her back beside the little thing. The newborn curiously sniffed the wolf, dodging swaying paws.

Boreal huffed a trickle of fire in surprise at Pad's uncharacteristically threatening behavior but didn't back down. Tal, too, was surprised, eyeing the young wolf with concern. "Hey, boy, what's wrong?"

Sah's dramatic whisper had both brows rising as Tal ambled over - not sitting down, precisely because Sah had tried to order him around - and he followed the hunter's gaze to the little fawn. "...huh." He backed up a step and dropped a hand onto Boreal's horns as the dragon made a hungry inquiry, gripping tightly so she wouldn't try to prowl any closer. "Figure it's your turn to get headbutted by a mama luxere, Jester?" he asked with genuine curiosity as to what the hail all the fuss was about.

Suddenly there is nothing but ice and wind all around you. Like being plunged into a whirlwind the air grows even more bitterly cold than it already was, and though you try and struggle against it, you feel your feet beginning to slip.

Before you know it there is a sudden SCHWAACK. Snow falls from the sky and you suddenly realize that there are two water elementals only a few meters ahead of you. They seem to be playing a game of…ice-ball-tag? Whatever it is they’re doing, it’s extremely dangerous.I’d…leave them to it, if I were you.

You’ve encountered a water elemental! This counts as a rare creature encounter for the purposes of levelling, but does not count as a Random Event for levelling or MP. There will be no further admin/re intervention. If you choose to follow this creature, you do so at your own risk, however, just having it in this thread is enough to satisfy your levelling requirements. You may not kill your rare creature without admin permission.

Water Elementals (Uncommon/mythical): Not much is known about these creatures other than that they appear during particularly nasty storms. With the ability to manipulate the water in the icy-landscape as well as that within your body, water elementals range from incredibly dim-witted to quite clever.

Sah
The forest never sleeps and the wolf never dies
"He's too little to be alone. We should find his mother or herd." Sah whispered back. Although it was common for luxere to leave young fawns alone, just as many other deer species, the small fawn in front of them was younger. The fact that this one was spoke of something amiss and it made the Abandoned's paternal instincts flare. Hotaru and Cordelia were sure to tease him about this later.

Then there's a ruckus and the small fawn startles, diving into Lilly's side. The wolf quickly twisted, letting the smaller creature hide beneath her. Scowling, Sah used his water magic and sent a ball of his own ice at the elementals, trying to temp them to follow it and move their game elsewhere. Pad snarled at the elementals but a soothing hand on his back from Sah kept him still.

"An' how do you know it's--" Before Tal could finish his teasing question the wind stole the words from his throat and he ducked his head against the sudden onslaught of sleet and ice. Pulling his Goggles down into place with the swift ease of long habit, he squinted through the smoked glass to try and find the threat.

Which was way too close at hand for comfort, and Boreal had shouldered her way forward to place herself - and her scales and fire - between Lilly and the elementals at their game.

"Yeah, well, grab it an' let's go!" Tal's suggestion was accompanied by the sharp crack of another ice ball shooting between the two men as the elementals seemed to think Sah wanted to join them in playing 'ice ball tag.'

Sah
The forest never sleeps and the wolf never dies
Sah's plan quickly backfired. "Oh shit." Lilly reacted quickly, gently grabbing the dear by the back of the neck as she used to do for Pad. With said black wolf, guarding her side, the two quickly began to move away from the elementals. Sah wasn't far behind, throwing up a shield of ice and snow to further separate the group from the dangerous game.

"Go!" Urging Tal forward, Sah held the shield up until they were a safe distance away. Glancing back, he saw that the spot where they and the fawn had previously been, had been reduced to a crater. Gently placing the fawn on the ground, Lilly stood protectively over the little one. She tilted her head, questioning the two men as to what their next move should be.

Tal didn't need urging twice. As soon as the companions were moving, so was the courier, falling in beside Sah to keep the little group together until they could make their retreat. Once they'd gotten away from the wind and hail he looked back and swallowed hard at what he'd seen.

"Well... shit. Maybe that's what scared its mama away?" He glanced down at the little luxere who was trembling with what he guessed was fear at all the excitement around it. Boreal snorted and huffed a little fire back towards the elementals as if to say "and stay there," wings mantled to make herself look larger and Tal grinned at her. "Thatta girl."

Looking back to Sah, his grin fell away into a more serious expression which became a scowl as he rubbed at the back of his neck. "But the herd won't come back for it 'long as we're standin' around the little beastie with two wolves an' a dragon," he pointed out, voice uncomfortably gentle as he tried to break the hard truth to the hunter who seemed to have gotten weirdly attached to the little thing already.

Sah
The forest never sleeps and the wolf never dies
Sah sighed heavily, "I know." The little fawn just tugged at his heartstrings. Lilly gave the small creature a lick on the head as she urged it to step out from hiding. "Let's find it a safe spot to wait for the herd, since the elementals recked it's hiding spot." Reaching down, the Abandoned gently picked up the small luxere. Despite Sah's nature as a dark mage, the infant nestled into the crook his arms without complaint.

Turning away so Tal wouldn't see how his eyes softened, Sah began to trek towards distant trees. There was a trail of hoofprints in the snow that suggested that the herd had fled there. Finding the fawn a place nearby seemed like the best bet.

There were a couple of things that Tal thought about saying, but he bit his tongue and simply sighed, shaking his head. "Sure," he agreed. He started to move forward to pick the little beastie up, figuring it would try to avoid Sah because of his lightning and all--

But for some reason it didn't shy away from the Abandoned the way its kind usually did. Both of Tal's brows rose in surprise as he fell in beside his frenemy. A soft whistle sent Boreal up to be their eyes in the sky - and to avoid getting her scent any further around the area they wanted to leave the fawn - and he walked in uncomfortable silence for a moment before nodding towards the little bundle of stick-limbed legs and too-big eyes in Sah's arm. "So, uh. That's new. Y'got a new magic or somethin' t'keep the luxere from runnin' away from you now?" Which would be useful in the man's line of work, given that he might have hunted down some of the baby deer's aunts and uncles for food in previous seasons.

Sah
The forest never sleeps and the wolf never dies
Sah glanced over at Tal with some confusion, "No?" Catching on he let out a hum, "Ah. I think it's just because he liked Lilly and I smell like her." That and animals tended to like the Abandoned, granted that was usually canines. Perhaps his paternal-ness had reached the fawn? Or the fact that he'd only used white and grey magic in its presence so far? Both were stretching it, but Sah didn't have any other explanations.

Finding a small bush, Sah set the fawn down. Turning his hand, he commanded the ice and snow around them to rise at a slow rate. Once he was satisfied with the small fortress he'd given the fawn, he stepped back with a nod. "There. Now he can wait safely." Reaching down, the Abandoned gave the small fawn a gentle pat on the head while Lilly walked over and gave him a lick on the cheek.

Task complete, Sah turned back to Tal, "Shall we get going?" The courier had indulged him enough and the Abandoned wasn't sure how much longer his fellow Halovian's patience would last.

"It's not gonna--" Again Tal bit off what he'd been intending to say and just shook his head, heaving a sigh. If the fawn was that fearless around wolves, or attached the scent of one to safety, it wasn't likely to live long enough to grow up. There was no point in being cruel, though, and if it gave his frenemy a little spark of joy the courier wasn't going to be the mean-spirited ass who yanked it away from him. He accepted the explanation with a shrug and jammed his hands in his pockets as he trailed behind the hunter.

Boreal kept an eye out behind them while Sah and Lilly said their farewells. Tal trudged over to peer down at the little fawn morosely as the others finished. "Yeah." He replied to the hunter, waiting for him to start walking away as he glanced at the baby one last time. "Good luck, kid," he mumbled under his breath. The fawn was probably going to need it; they'd had to move it from where its mother had left it, but Lilly or Sah had carried it the whole way. There wasn't much of a scent trail for the mother to follow if she came back, and now the little creature was hidden behind a snow blind. Tal had grown up on the Tundra. He knew the luxere fawn's chances... but that was the way of life in Halo.

Turning on his heel, he trotted to catch up with Sah and deliberately bumped his shoulder into the other man's. "C'mon. I can give you a ride back into town. Diedre was bakin' cookies today an' I bet we can snag a couple if we're quick..."
