Those not particularly versed in Halo’s weather systems wouldn’t have bothered going out in the swell of snow and flurries. Those familiar with the wake and world around them knew traversing through multiple weather systems was just par for the course. Merchants had deadlines. Hunters had meat to haul home. Families had means and measures to convey. So when the guild, and Wardens alike, were contacted with the influx of water elementals striving to intervene with civilians and citizens, the first hunt of the new year came upon them.

Already extending the invitation to Ronin, the Sword, completely unbothered with the swirl of wind and icicles pelting him, he turned towards those already gathered alongside. “The hunters said they’d been attacked near the bend,” and he pointed towards a ritual path used and associated with multiple residents. Dragging the sled with leftover bait on it, wondering if that would be more apt to persuade the elementals to uncoil from their hideaway (or if their existences would be enough, and he was leaning towards that), Deimos checked in on the rest of their preparations, before granting his warnings. “Be on the lookout.”

This is the Monster Hunter Guild’s Flowerbirth hunt! Please post your character coming along, and anything they’re bringing. They can keep following Deimos for now.

Deimos has everything listed on his profile, except for his companions, and is dragging a sled with some leftover bait on it.

Ronin had received Deimos's note, and he'd be lying to say he hadn't felt a boyish pang of excitement to be going out on a hunt again. And so once the sun appears again over the horizon and Longnight officially turns to Flowerbirth, he marches down from the mountain towards the icy crags of Halo. And when Ronin joins them in the Tundra, he's bundled in a coat and scarf with a pale dragon on his shoulder.

"That seems right up your street," he remarks to Sugar quietly, of being on the lookout. To the others, he offers a smile that's just visible over his scarf and stomps some of the snow from his boots. "I don't think I've ever encountered a water elemental," he says to Deimos. "Is there anything we should be mindful about?"

Evie
Did you ever love her? Do you know?
She'd been a little hesitant to join this time around, if only because her magic doesn't seem to have much use against water. Not without a good deal of creativity. Luckily she has that in spades, and she couldn't very well let lie the attack that had happened to their hunters - so here she is.

Ronin and Noah are both familiar at least, and Evie is grateful to have them along. She may be the weakest on the team, but at least she could heal any injuries at the very worst. Following alongside Deimos as he hauls the bait-laden sled, Evie keeps her eyes to the snowy horizon as the Sword had instructed, an ear tuned for Deimos' response to the demigod. Er, one of them.

Water elementals were not on the list of things Noah expected the hunters to report. When he heard what had happened, his jaw set and he went to Deimos and Evie right away. Thankfully they both had the same thing in mind (even if Evie didn’t have as such a desire for vengeance a the men did), and they set off.

Noah kept pace with the wardens, and gave Ronin a firm nod and a greeting pat to his shoulder when he joined them. Good to see you. his voice was warm over the attuned bond. Though Ronin’s question was directed at Deimos, Noah answered anyway. ”They’ve got control over water and ice as strong as any mage.” Stronger, some could argue. Noah heard tales of these creatures, but had never encountered them before personally. His father, though, told him as a child that he had a hunting party ambushed by them when he had been on his first ever seal hunt at the Sea of Glass. Two men had been killed, and one seriously maimed. Noah knew that man — he still sat at the bar of any pub that would serve him without question, one arm missing and half of his face mangled.

Noah has everything listed on his profile except Eira, as well as a bow, 12 arrows (in his quiver), a hunting knife, and a length of leather cord rolled up on his belt.

They had their brief moments and lulls before the jutting of rock and boulders signified the upcoming turn, and potential threat, giving the Sword enough time to answer inquiries and hopefully give Evie a momentary elbow of reassurance. Addressing Ronin after Noah, he shrugged his shoulders, offering all he could. “Tend to be amorphous as well. Can range from very intelligent, to not at all.” And based on the latest stories, it was probably the former rather than the latter.

Nodding towards the rest and striding outwards, his eyes narrowed as well, seeking out anything out of the ordinary, through winding snowflakes and a harsher wind. Sugar, based on her capabilities, would likely be the first one to spot something.

Well, somethings.

Not enticed by the bait, but merely the group of travelers, the elementals took notice with great relish and aplomb. Three, to be exact, ranging from one enormous (and dimwitted) blob of water to two more defined figures, though they seemed to be morphing at a rapid pace.

“There. Get ready.” was a deep rumble from Deimos, and enough to ensure he was gathering his incantations. The creatures did much the same –

Well, except for the blob.

While the massive behemoth surveyed high amidst the drifts, its counterparts shifted quickly, ensuring any snowflakes in their range were altered into shards of ice, descending in a haphazard haze towards the hunters.

The water elementals have spotted our intrepid hunters and have begun shooting ice shards at them! What will you do? Please make sure to include a summary at the bottom of your post! No post order.

Glancing around at the touch of a hand to his shoulder and a warm, familiar presence in his thoughts, Ronin gives Noah a smile in return, listening close as he explains while Sugar takes to the skies overhead. "They sound delightful," he remarks, continuing to gather himself and his thoughts as they continue along the trail.

Sugar's warning trill comes only a moment before the elementals come into view, the dragonling circling around to avoid any ice shards directed her way. Ronin, however, does the opposite. "I'll draw them in," he says, slipping forward and throwing his arm up, where it shifts and morphs into a vast fan of fiery crimson. If nothing else, the icy spears might melt against the feathery shield of his phoenix wing; the Huntsman is fairly confident he can walk it off afterwards.

Ronin partially shifts his arm into a phoenix's wing, planning to draw all of the attention/aggro to let the others attack!

It didn't take long for the group to find what they were looking for, and it didn't surprise the hunter. Letting the predatory senses of his polar bear take him over, Noah shifted into the massive beast. The elementals wasted no time in changing the world to fit their desires, and Noah growled and grunted with disdain.

Ronin shifted, partially, and went out. Noah grunted and stood on his hind legs. He turned his massive body so that his back was facing the elementals and he looked down at Evie. He wished he could convey words to her over the attuned bond, though it didn't stop him from wordlessly carrying on with his plan. He grabbed the Warden in a literal bear hug to shield her from the sharp shards of ice raining down on them. His thick fur and even thicker layer of muscle and fat were going to protect him nicely, but Evie was more vulnerable to the attacks in the moment than him.

Noah knew that if Ronin would be able to draw the elemental's attention, then the three Halovians could strike them. Now, however, he needed to keep the redhead safe so that they could continue with the hunt and assault.

Noah shifts to his polar bear form and covers Evie from the attack.

Evie
Did you ever love her? Do you know?
Deimos' gentle elbow to her side is more than reassuring, it is steadying, and she smiles gratefully up at him for it. She has faced down LongNight monsters, giant Landsharks, and Banshee Queens; she is more than aware of her own capabilities as a fighter. But amidst demigods and champions, she knows she is the weaker link. So when the elementals show themselves in all their bristling fury, her heart drops through her stomach the moment Noah turns to grab her in his huge arms - not because he scares her, but because she knows what lies beyond the thick fur and warmth that protects her.

Her hands rise immediately to the coarse fur around her, ready to push her magic into him to heal anything that may have been torn or wounded on her behalf; everything happens too swiftly for her to thank him verbally, to feel overwhelmed and touched by his selflessness and care, but she will fix any harm as her gratitude.

And, given the elementals will remain distracted by Ronin and Deimos, the Evergreen commands her earth magic to rise behind the water spirits in a curved wall that will hopefully keep them from retreating out into the vastness of the snow, preventing the party from having to split up.

- - -

Evie prepares to heal Noah if he is injured, and tries to structure a wall behind the water elementals to keep them from fleeing and the group having to split up to pursue.

It turned out that no matter which monsters, fiends, and creatures the hunters had faced, they’d never quite squared up with something like water elementals, and they’d be coming with their own learning curves.

Perhaps experience alone saved them from further plights. In something that could’ve been a blow to Ronin’s ego, for the Huntman’s attempts should’ve been foolproof; a pinpoint of focus for the amorphous beings to hone in on and pummel - they directed their attention entirely elsewhere.

In fact, one shouldn’t underestimate Blob Bobs or Slightly Smarter Cohorts.

Well, led on by the plan of the Genius. Let’s not give them all the credit.

Noah’s concerns and shielding turned out to be necessary; for between other assaults and sieges, both acolytes targeted the Evergreen and Sentinel respectively. Which meant the latter ended up taking the brunt of the attack – icy contortions sure to wage a significant amount of pain, no matter how bulky the polar bear was.

But with those notions, Evie was fully guarded from the brunt of the force; granting her opportunity to not only heal Noah’s wounds, but give rise to a wall forming behind the monsters. Whether or not they’d notice, or how long it would take (probably another round) to fully form would be up in the air.

While Deimos clenched his jaw, mostly out of apprehension and then unwinding irritation, he opted to take a battle of mage properties. Which of them, the Sword or the elementals, could control and contort the facets better? The Warden managed, for the moment, to win out in some portions, shoving the wave of ice shards back towards the Genius, pummeling the creature with its own creation.

He only shifted his attention briefly back to Evie and Noah, shouting over the haze of the wind and storm. “You all right?” Because otherwise, they were going to have to figure out a new plan.

At which, all the elementals began to stir a further haze into the mix, making them far more difficult to see.

--

Ronin has attempted to lure attacks towards him, but it didn’t work.

Noah has shielded Evie from attacks, but in the process, got hit by a lot of ice shards.

Evie has healed Noah and started to build a wall behind the elementals (it will need another round to be completed, if the monsters don’t notice).

Deimos has used the ice shards against the elementals, and hit Genius.

The elementals have made themselves harder to see in the storm!

Ronin is braced, expecting pain to come from behind his shield of fiery plumage. And when it doesn't, he peeps over the wing much in the way as a guard would poke their head above a parapet - which is when he realises that apparently he's not flashy or handsome enough for the water elementals.

Self-projection and bruised egos aside, the Huntsman promptly shifts his arm back and straightens up, frowning through the mist as everything grows hazy. His instinct is to go overboard shift into a dragon, but he doesn't want to destroy the wall Evie has been working so hard on.

So instead, armed with three points of light around him in a halo, he dives into the fray, loosing them at Blob Blob (or where he thinks he is) for no other reason than because he's the biggest.

Ronin shifts his arm back, dives into the fray, and flings three starbolts at Blob Bob!

The strangest thing in the world is to be hurt and healed at the same time.

Shards of ice shooting as quick as rockets crash and slice into the polar bear. Despite his quiet nature, he cannot help but the roar of pain that rips through his throat and erupts into the storm around them as skin and muscle tear at the assault. It is all he can do, though. He would not dare move. He felt Evie beneath the shelter of his arms, and it took all of his strength to keep himself planted firmly there for her, his massive arms curled around her and holding her close.

His roar dies, however, when the same skin and same muscle torn in less than a second by the elemental attack is sewn back together. Warmth filled him up from the back to the front, much like taking one too many shots back of whiskey. The tingling sensation of healing and the sharp, searing pain that was once there battled against each other until all Noah could feel was fine.

The man groaned as his body shifted down from its massive bear form, and the hunter steadied himself on his human feet once again. He locked eyes with Evie only for a moment, a fleeting thank you behind deep glacier hues, before his body and eyes glowed brightly with the height of his anger. He turned and let loose the stag. The roaring, flaming, bringer of light galloped from him and lowered its great antlered head to dispel flame and light on the elementals trapped in Evie's stone shield.

Noah shifts back and sends out his stag to attack the elementals, his passive magic is enabled to hopefully help the visibility!

Magic: Blazing (Passive) | Eyes and body glow with bright, flowing celestial energy when experiencing heightened emotion.
Type: Light | Rank: Basic

Magic: Spirit Stag | Can summon the spirit of a mighty stag; an echo of Noah's former shift. This will last for 1 post per thread and appears to be made of pure sunlight. Noah can direct the stag to charge at a target, dealing fire damage and causing disadvantage on their next roll.

Evie
Did you ever love her? Do you know?
The roar of Noah's pain shakes her, and though her hands are too sure to shake, they push magic as fast as they can into his body in a vain attempt to shorten that pain into mere moments instead of prolonged minutes. Fur becomes skin and clothing, and the blue of Noah's eyes makes her hands spasm around it all with the split-second desire to hold him firm and rooted before her - the ghost of another man's blue eyes jolting old, painful memories that make it difficult to see him turn and run into the fray. "We're okay," she calls back to Deimos, though he of all of them might notice the waver to her tone. She has to focus on the blonde of Noah's hair to bring herself out of it, and scolds herself internally for such a moment of distraction.

Shaken, the Evergreen takes quick stock of the battle - all three men attacking, which makes her hesitant to tangle herself amidst their greater prowess. Instead, she retrieves her shield and braces it before her in place of Noah's protection, and begins building the wall higher behind the elementals, so that they will be forced to confront the warriors before them instead of disappearing into the landscape behind them.

- - -

Evie equips her shield and braces it while focusing her earth magic to make the stone wall higher to hopefully prevent the elementals scattering from the attacks of the others.

Type: Light | Style: Defensive | Level: Basic
Longtooth Shield | A fang-shaped shield crafted from the tooth of a gigantic landshark and mysterious shards of bone. It is adorned with ebony flecks of volcanic rock. This item blocks physical damage at Evie's Basic level and requires a 2 post cool-down between uses.

Earth Manipulation: Can manipulate the earth. Must be within a 30ft radius. Control is excellent.

DEIMOS
The confusion and chaos might have persisted and continued, had they been a lesser group of ragtag individuals. Instead, they were honed and mighty, experienced from the leagues of monsters and mayhem faced in their day to day nuances across Caido.

The air turned over, quite literally, the moment Deimos could hear the waver in Evie’s voice, see the rush of assaults and sieges upon brethren and comrades. His incantations measured in equal fervor, frustration, and rage, a torrent washing over, unfurled and unrepentant, peeling away the layers of piercing winds and vital storms, pushing it all back until the elementals had nowhere to hide, straight into Evie’s wall.

From there, Ronin’s assaults and sieges were bright and brilliant against the outline of amorphous tactics; a light show of deadly persistence and persuasion. It’d be the Blob Bob who caught the full brunt of starbolts slung, the fixtures of its watery convictions gone within an instant, beginning to fall from the sky and towards the tundra ground.

Noah’s stags and own illuminating achievements meant the Slightly Smarter Cohort took the brunt of its antlered manifestations, and it didn’t look too happy as it altered and changed shape, mimicking the Sentinel’s own siege. It might’ve sent a volley, a rally, of smaller fawns and does in watery execution, had Deimos’ Air not ensured everything whipped right back.

Evie’s measures were calculated and wise, pressuring them further into the stony hold and fixtures. The rocks rose upwards and over, surrounding them in all directions, save for the straight line of assaults for both hunters and elementals. She wouldn’t need her shield for this round, but it was still beneficial for what came next.

The Genius, not even remotely despondent about its fallen ally, gave a feral hiss, and plucked at the droplets of Blob Bob that had been rushing towards the terrain. Instead, it plucked, reformed, and honed them into a rampage of twisting, turning shards, aiming them straight for Noah again. The impact was probably more than irritating – but it showed they weren’t done yet.

Like ensuring the snow beneath the hunters suddenly turned to ice.

--

The combined efforts of the Monster Hunters has ensured the following:

- Evie’s wall stands strong around and behind the elementals, essentially boxing them in.
- Deimos’ Mastered Air has ensured the surrounding storms and winds has died down, and pushed the elementals further into the stone walls.
- Ronin has successfully attacked Blob Bob and killed it.
- Noah’s attack has reached Slightly Smarter Cohort, and given it a fair amount of damage.

On the elementals’ side:
- Slightly Smarter Cohort has tried to attack, but missed due to Deimos’ Air. It has morphed into a stag similar to Noah’s.
- Genius has used its dead ally, Blob Bob, to form an attack upon Noah.
- The elementals have turned the ground to ice.

There's a lot that happens in a short space of time, most of it positive, but that doesn't mean they're near the end of their assault. And for Ronin it's like breathing fresh air for the first time in a long while; the Huntsman is smiling despite himself to watch the enormous elemental fall (take that, and also sorry, Blob Bob), and he readies himself for the next barrage of attacks.

"Cover your eyes!" he calls to his companions as a fierce glow ignites within him. Giving them ample opportunity to shield their sight from his Supernova, Ronin allows himself to detonate in a blast of celestial light that will heal his allies as well as damage their watery opponents.

Ronin advises everyone to cover their eyes while he detonates his Supernova!

Magic: Supernova | A blast of celestial light emanates from Ronin in a 60ft radius. Any allies hit by the light are healed, whilst any enemies take damage (Mastered healing/damage). May be used three times per thread, with a two post cooldown.
