Alys Glasse
Alys stood at the edge of the Sea of Glass, looking out over the black water with a look of awe on her face. When she'd first come to Halo and heard of the Sea, she hadn't fully understood or appreciated just how vast it was. But from her vantage point, it stretched on forever, a dark stretch of water broken only by bits and pieces of ice scattered in a haphazard pattern across the surface.

The young woman pulled her cloak more tightly around herself and sat - rather ungracefully - near the edge of the water, her legs crossed beneath her. She hadn't come with any particular goal in mind, but now that she sat there, she pulled out her tarot journal and turned to a blank page. There was something inspiring about the landscape, and if she could capture it, perhaps she could use it as a card one day.

So there she sat, hunched over her notebook, carefully sketching out the landscape, oblivious to the world around her.

this is the reckoning
Patrols weren’t limited to just the Citadel; the Sword and his guards traversed across the tundra for numerous reasons: ensuring routes were safe, passages weren’t bogged down by water elementals, no storms plagued or lost travelers along its vast holdings. Today though, in his seditious form of liberation, he careened across the landscape with only his companions – nose to the wind, relishing in the frigid air spreading across his fur.

Belial soared ahead, or lingered behind, while Zuriel kept an even pace as they gallivanted along familiar paths, then routed along towards the Sea of Glass. Favored and cherished for a variety of reasons, his piercing gaze hovered upon motions of the cold waves, and then to another sight; recognizing Alys clustered amidst the icy shoal and rocks. Knowing she’d be able to recognize both unicorn and peryton, he opted for mischief. Curious and juvenile, he meandered along the outcroppings, before bestowing a loud and eerie howl, which could’ve turned into a hound’s grin thereafter.

Alys Glasse
Alys had been at her sketching for some time and was beginning to grow frustrated. Her artwork was not the most realistic nor the most refined, and there was just something about the Sea of Glass that she was failing to capture just so. She scrubbed away a section of charcoal, scowling down at the paper in her lap, and was about to try again when a bone-chilling howl rose from the icy shoals behind her. She tensed, feeling suddenly very alone and very exposed, and set down her work, turning slowly to glance over her shoulder -

And right into the eyes of a hellhound.

Her breath caught in surprise, and she dropped her charcoal, suddenly tensing, ready to scramble to her feet and flee; but then she caught sight of a peryton and a unicorn, and, recognizing their forms, at least, she relaxed. She huffed softly, only a little annoyed at having be caught by surprise, and sent a half-hearted glare at their master. Then she reached for her charcoal, snapped her journal shut, and put it away. "Hello, Deimos," she called, her voice only a little peeved. "What in Caido are you doing?"

this is the reckoning
Content with the results of his irritation – modest surprise, a drop of charcoal, scrambled feet – he merely tilted his head at the call and peevish nature of her tone. Rolling his shoulders in what could be considered some sort of houndish shrug, his massive paws dug into the snow, leaving imprints along the earth. Zuriel glanced at the woman up and down with her discerning eye, before snorting, and picking at some growth near a rock.

But rather than shifting immediately to answer her question, his attention deviated to sounds and smells honing over his senses – large ears flicking back and forth, Belial’s, for once, silent postures over what he could see from a distance, head lifting to catch scents upon the wind – granting only a short bark, before beginning to wander further along the inland portions of the coast. It could’ve been an indication to follow – if she was of the curious sort.

For along the shoal and ice were clear indications of a luxere herd, somewhere in the midst.

For a moment, Alys debated whether or not she was curious enough to follow. On the one hand, she'd been quite content to sit along the water's edge, thank you very much. On the other, though, she was growing bored and irritated with her sketching, and whatever Deimos had in mind had to be better, right? So it was that she gathered her belongings, stuffed them into the bag she carried at her hip, and hurried to catch up with her mentor-turned-hellhound.

Alys was not well-versed in the flora and fauna of the area; nor was she particularly observant when it came to the markings they left behind. As a result, she was unsure of where they were going or why, but she plodded along behind the wolf-like creature with only a few grumbles. After all, Deimos had yet to lead her astray. In fact, he'd been nothing if not helpful to the young woman. Maybe this was another training exercise, though she hoped he'd turn back human for that. She would have trouble interpreting his meaning without the use of, y'know, words.

I carried my own ashes to the mountains
The longer they walked, the more the tracks became discernible; definitive amidst the ice and snow, deer-laden trails indicating far more than a group of stragglers. Once or twice he paused to smell the ground, lowering his massive head to gain more insights, before turning in another direction, following the midst of clues – almost snorting as he could hear Alys striving to catch up. Belial provided and presided above, his own agent of chaos, with some silent promise between the pair to not gallivant and scare off the intrepid cervine. Even if predator impulses blended and melded into their minds with rapt fixation.

Before long though, their forms could be seen from yards upon yards ahead. A large herd, likely more than forty, stopping, pausing, resting amidst their sojourns, likely to greener portions along the seasonal changes. Glowing horns were vibrant even in the midst of the day, signature differentiations between any other deer, and why he’d never hunt them.

He ducked behind a larger boulder, enough to conceal his figure, shifting promptly back into his human form, with a wry grin on his features. “Luxere,” he explained briefly in a rumbling whisper, with the crook of a grin resting in the corner of his mouth.

They walked for some time, and eventually, the tracks became so evident that even Alys could see them. She made a face at the back of Deimos's head, wondering why he was following a herd of... whatever they were tracking. She hoped he wasn't hungry. Did Attuned make kills in their shifted forms? If so, she was decidedly not interested in finding out. Still, she made an effort to quiet her footfalls, just in case there was another reason he was leading her to creatures in the wilderness.

She joined him behind the boulder as he shifted, peering around the edge towards the herd of luxere that lingered just beyond. They were majestic creatures, she had to admit, and their antlers glowed even in the light of day. She'd never seen them before, though she'd heard of them, and she watched as one young deer gallivanted about its mother, clearly having the time of its short life. She bit back a giggle at its antics, charmed in spite of herself. It seemed that even someone with as prickly a personality as Alys could be swayed by the sight of a baby!

"They're beautiful," she observed, her own voice a soft whisper. "There are so many!"

“We used them often during LongNight in the Grounds,” he offered, rising to his full height to peer over the boulder, watching them from a distance. The memories of their efforts served as visceral reminders for him frequently – and why, despite many other comrades’ insistence, he opted not to hunt them. Not when they’d selflessly guarded their makeshift shelters, not when the glow of their antlers warded off danger and the Voice’s demons. Even now, without the latter around, he still held them in high regard.

Sending Belial to continue gathering information overhead, and perhaps meander around to see if other predators stalked the herd, he watched as some simply picked through the snow, with hooves and muzzles, or the youth, much like the frost foxes he’d seen earlier with Evie, foolishly frolicked without a care in the world. “I like to see how they are doing every now and then,” by way of explanation of why he wandered out here. “They dislike my dark magic,” of which he had in multitudes, but the shrug of his shoulders to follow indicated he didn’t mind. “But they probably will not react to yours.”

That's right; she did have a vague memory of glowing antlers from nights in the Grounds. She hadn't really paid that close of attention at the time, but now that he mentioned it... "I remember now," she murmured. "To keep the demons away." She hadn't paid much attention to the war, it was true, but she'd known enough of what transpired to know that she should be grateful to the beautiful creatures before her.

To hear that they disliked Deimos's dark magic was a bit sad. Did that mean he had never been able to see them up close? That they ran from him like prey from a hunter? But Deimos didn't seem to mind, content to watch from afar. "You don't think they'd run from me?" she asked, perhaps a little tentatively. It was nice here behind their boulder, where she could watch the younglings cavort around under the watchful eyes of their parents. "I wouldn't want to disturb them."

He nodded, for the deer had always done the best they could. They had no way to stop the multitudes of people who still wandered out of their shelters during the deadliest week of the year. Even when the guild had burned down, they’d remained until panic had overtaken them, keeping the rest of their stronghold safe until they could snag refuges and sanctuaries once more. “We used to lure them with hay, apples, and singing.” He permitted another cheeky smile to endeavor through his quiet, rumbling whisper, watching as more of them stretched out along the outskirts of the herd, foraging as best they could.

Deimos knew he couldn’t interfere or grant them any such things now – it would disrupt the cycles and motions of the group – but it didn’t mean he wasn’t tempted. Glancing at Alys from the corner of his eye, he shrugged. “Then you do not need to.”

His eyes narrowed though, as the peryton overhead relayed information, a collection of images from the carnivorous beast’s eyes. “Belial sees an ursur further ahead,” jutting his jawline over to the right. The predator was probably intending to catch some pocket or corner of the deer undetected, and snatch a young or infirm one.

Alys pursed her lips at the mention of singing. Whether it would help her get closer to the creatures or not, she was not about to burst into song. Still, she longed to get closer, if even for a minute, and so she wavered on the edge of indecision - until Deimos mentioned the ursur.

Her eyes snapped back to her mentor (?), a frown creasing her brow. Though generally not one to involve herself where it wasn't needed, she did quite like animals, and she would hate to see these mauled by an ursur before her eyes. "Is it after the herd?" she asked softly. Then, hesitantly: "Could we scare it away?" A feral grin lit her face. "I've been practicing my illusions. I could distract it, if I could get close enough." And if Deimos was willing to help her hunt the beast. Though she had intentions to learn to protect herself, she had yet to begin, and she would be no match for an ursur on her own.

When Alys didn’t produce some lyrical notions, he muffled another chuckle threatening to unwind through his chest. Not that it much mattered, when there were other dangerous aspects coming to the forefront, depending on their choices.

He wished he could say he was surprised at her inquiry and then intentions, but a sly smile crept forth on his mouth anyway. Without his rugged sled, and having no impulse to create another one, the Sword wasn’t about to completely eradicate a fellow predator just for the sake of it – but scaring it away? The merits had potential. “Most likely intends to pick some young, sick, or elderly ones,” and he glimpsed ahead, watching as the herd seemed to either not notice, or simply hadn’t had any alarm raised yet. “It would be a good opportunity to test your illusions. And only if we are startling it,” he mulled over, as if his mind hadn’t been made already.

Considering and contemplating, especially with Belial overhead and Zuriel well behind them, pulling at weeds, he knew his companions were safe, and he certainly wouldn’t let anything happen to Alys. “Follow me, but keep yourself out of their sight.” His jaw jutted towards more rows of boulders and crag, where she could hide, or to break out more of her duplicitous methods in obscuring.

And then, within an instant, he’d shifted once more, into a sienna eagle, hastening over the horizon, then dipping to the right, where his peryton had indicated the bear was near.

Deimos mulled her suggestion over, and Alys shifted uneasily on her feet. While he deliberated, the ursur could be stalking ever closer to the herd, and she'd no desire to see a luxere mauled and eaten when she could potentially do something about it. It took Deimos but a moment to make his decision, and when he jutted his jaw towards rows of boulders, Alys nodded shortly, a determined gleam in her eyes.

As Deimos shifted and disappeared, Alys took a deep breath, feeling suddenly very alone. She'd never sought out confrontation before - particularly not with what was likely to be a large, angry bear - and now that Deimos's large presence was gone, she began to second guess herself. But her mind had been made up, and Deimos had agreed, and she didn't think he would let her get eaten. So she followed his winged form to the right, trying to move as quickly and quietly as she could while remaining out of sight.

Deimos had lived multiple lives on confrontation; so the manner in which they approached didn’t rankle or bother him at all. He coasted overhead, occasionally glancing downward to ensure Alys was following, remained safe, and not overwhelmed by something else. Only when he spotted the bear did he begin to descend, a purposeful, slow unwinding, wings outstretched as if he didn’t have a care in the world, until he could pinpoint and land amidst the rocky outcroppings.

Belial continued to serve as a spy from above, while the Sword shifted back to normal statures. Avoiding spooking the herd with his existence had been his main goal, and now he primarily honed and focused on the ursur. Waiting for Alys to join him at the particular spot, he jutted his jaw again, for her to glance over the boulder and peer upon what they intended to deter and distract.

It was a good-sized, young thing; probably one of the many yearlings making their way around the tundra. But it was also quiet, only mildly shuffling and snorting at the ground, occasionally lifting its head to scour the herd; a pretense. A low whisper, a muffled rumble, eventually left his throat, intending to see how she faired in methodical notions. “What would you like to try first?”
