TRIGGER WARNING: IMPLICATIONS OF RAPE

The night was dark, save for the lights of the surrounding taverns, shops, and other establishments among the Silk Houses. There were plenty of people on the streets; their speech and laughter colored the air, creating a background of white noise. Despite the reputation of this area of the city, Soh had found that some of the best eating houses in Stormbreak resided amongst the brothels and gambling parlors. She simply ignored the parts of the area that she didn't wish to associate with, typically going straight from her shop to the restaurant without even glancing in the other establishments' directions.

On this particular night, Soh stepped out of her favorite such eatery, tucking the change from her meal into the small purse she wore on her belt. She hurried down the busy main street, ducking past street vendors and dodging the milling crowd. It wasn't far to the shortcut she used to get home: a quiet side street, rarely frequented by other people. In fact, she'd never seen another soul on her way home from the Silk Houses, and she didn't expect this night to be any different.

The man lingered in the shadows of the main street, his dark eyes on the crowd. It was a busy night in the Silk Houses, and the man knew there would be easy marks on the streets. He spent a lot of time in the area, frequenting the gambling dens and brothels, and he owed a great deal of money as a result. Sometimes he won big at the gambling houses, but others - like the night before - he lost spectacularly. While he normally worked as a cutpurse on the main drag of the Silk Houses, his losses the night before had made him desperate. Tonight he needed a bigger mark - and besides, there was something more fun about a face-to-face robbery than simply cutting purses. And, if he chose the right mark...

A girl barely into womanhood exited an eating house on the other side of the street, and the man's attention was immediately drawn to her as she tucked some money away in a purse worn on her belt. She was a pretty young thing, and she dressed well. She didn't look rich, but neither did she look poor. What she did look like was an easy mark. She barely looked at her surroundings as she hurried down the main street. The man followed, a predatory gleam in his eye, and grinned to himself as the girl turned down a seldom-used side street. This was going to be fun.

"Excuse me, miss?" he called as he followed her down the street, far enough from the main drag that her cries would go unheard. "I think you dropped this."

Soh walked down the side street, her attention on the bag she carried at her side. She kept a small bag on her at all times, carrying her journal and writing utensils, in case she came across something to sketch or record. She'd pulled out her journal at the restaurant and used one of her favorite pencils to record some notes on a recent cartography expedition, and now she couldn't remember having put it back. As she was digging through the bag, she heard a man's voice call out, and she looked up, relieved. Perhaps she'd dropped her pencil, and someone had seen it fall from her bag!

The man was larger than her and muscular, reminding her almost of Deimos in size and body type. That was where the similarities ended, however. This man had dirty blonde hair, and rather than looking at her in exasperation (like Deimos) or protectiveness (like Sunjata), this man leered at her - almost like the man back in Sunjata's brothel. Soh was immediately uncomfortable, but she wanted her pencil back. "Oh, thank y-"

What she was not expecting was for the man to grab her by the arm and force her into an alley, even further away from the merry sounds of the market behind them.

The man grinned as the girl turned around; this was going to be even easier than he'd expected. As she started to thank him, he grabbed her by the arm and shoved her sideways, into a nearby alley. The alley was a dead end, and he released her, blocking her only way out. "Alright, sweetheart," the man drawled, a leering grin on his lips, "We can do this the easy way or the hard way. Hand over your money." And maybe, if he felt lucky, he could take a little bit more.

Sohalia was, fortunately, not a complete idiot, and she generally carried very little money on her person. What she did carry was a dagger at her belt, and she had been learning how to use it. Still, she was reluctant to draw it for several reasons. One, if she gave the man the little money she had that night, it was possible that he would leave her alone. Two, if she drew her weapon, it was possible that he would draw his own - and she couldn't tell from her vantage point if he was carrying one, or what he was carrying. In all likelihood, he would be more skilled than she with any potential weapon, and she wasn't about to get herself killed over the measly amount of money in her purse. She didn't have the room or the time to shift, and even if she was successful, it was possible that the man could catch her before she had time to take flight.

So she held up her hands in the universally-accepted sign of acquiescence. "Fine," she said, her voice remarkably calm; it was a strange feeling, the calmness, as though she was watching herself from outside her body. She slowly reached down to unclip her purse from her belt. Maybe, if she threw it, the man would go after it, and she could run away. So she took the belt-purse, showed it to the man, and then threw it to one side, hoping the man would go for the purse as she tried to dart around him.

The man watched as the girl held up her hands, leering at her. She agreed readily enough to hand over her money; there probably wasn't much in the purse, then, if she was that willing to part with it. That was a shame. It meant he'd have to return to the Silk Houses for another victim when he was done with her.

The girl unclipped the purse from her belt and held it up briefly, then threw it to one side. He stepped towards it, but then she was darting around him - or trying to. The alley was fairly narrow, so it was easy for him to reverse direction, snag her around the waist, and hurl her back towards the wall behind her. "I don't think so, sweetheart," he growled as he advanced, that predatory grin back on his face.

Soh tried to dart around the man when he stepped towards her purse, but she was too slow and the alleyway too narrow: the man snagged her around the waist and flung her backwards. She hit the wall behind her with a resounding crack! and slumped to the ground, dazed, watching with distant horror as the man approached her, grinning evilly. The man reached for her, and Soh panicked, struggling to rise from the ground and get into a position where she could fight back.

The man punched her in the face.

Down she went, reeling and disoriented, the left side of her face on fire. A hand came up instinctively to cradle her cheek as tears began to fall from her eyes. She looked back to find the man reaching for her again, grabbing her by the hair to drag her back up. She shrieked in pain, clawing at the man's hand, eliciting a hiss from him as her nails bit into his flesh. He released his hold on her hair, only to grab her and pin her against the wall again when she tried to run.

There was something deeply satisfying about the way the girl fell to the ground, her hair coming unpinned and tumbling down her back. As she looked up at him, tears in her eyes, he simply grinned. He grabbed her by the hair and pulled her closer, reveling in the power he held over her. But the girl, as it turned out, was not as weak as she first appeared. She scratched at his hand with long nails, and he hissed with pain and released her, shaking out his hand with a scowl. When she tried to rush past him, he grabbed her again and shoved her against the wall of the alley, pinning her with his forearm across her shoulders. She struggled, but he was bigger and stronger than her, and he wasn't going to let her go that easily. He reached for her skirts, yanking at the fabric and grinning when it ripped.

Soh found herself pinned against the wall by her shoulders and reached up to try and pry the man's arm off her. But he was bigger and stronger than she was, and her attempts to move his arm were in vain. She tried to kick at him, but he was pressed so closely that she couldn't get a good angle. She felt his hand trail down her side to yank at her skirts, heard the fabric rip, and realized what was about to happen. The color drained from her face and she opened her mouth to scream -

The man slapped her. "Not a word," he said threateningly.

It was then that she remembered her dagger.

She continued to struggle, but this time, she reached up to try and surreptitiously unsheathe her dagger. "Stop," she begged, tears falling down her cheeks. "Please!" But the man's hand kept roaming, and there was suddenly the stark realization that she was out of options.

So she struck, driving the dagger up and towards the man with all her might.

The girl opened her mouth to scream, and the man slapped her. "Not a word," he threatened, then continued to pull at her clothes. The girl continued to struggle, but it was useless. He grinned as he realized how close he was to his prize. If he couldn't get rich off the girl, at least she would serve some purpose. He ignored her pleading.

The pain in his side was unanticipated. It was also the last thing he would ever feel. The dagger had penetrated his side at such an angle that it slid between two ribs and into his heart. He stumbled back and fell to his knees. The last thing he saw was the girl's wild grey eyes.

Sohalia drove the dagger upwards, intending to injure the man enough that he would drop her. If she could distract him long enough, she thought maybe she could run from the alley and find help. What she was not anticipating was the warmth of the blood on her hands and the look on the man's face as he staggered back, her knife buried in his side. She watched in horror as he slumped to his knees, watched as the life faded from his eyes, watched as he slid sideways to the ground in a heap.

Soh turned to the side and vomited. Only when there was nothing left in her stomach and her body had tired of heaving did she look up to find the man's dead eyes staring through her. She felt dizzy. She had to get out of here. She couldn't stay here with the man she'd murdered, not if he was going to keep staring at her.

So she forced herself to turn away from the man's corpse and stumbled from the alley.
