The book of love is long and boring
Sam was not by nature a brave or adventurous person, but he was a curious one. The barrier's fall did not inspire him to go exploring (he had no one to go with, anyway) but it did make him want to see it, to write about it, to create diagrams and histories so people who would grow up without it's caging influence could know how it was.

And to do that, he had to actually go and see the remnants of it. He had heard there was a scar in the earth from the presence of the barrier and as he got close he could see it, a great burn-like mark in the ground (and then beyond, a lush and green forest, but he tried to ignore that; didn't want to look too closely in case it somehow tempted him over). Crouching down, he brought a jar from his pocket and scooped up some of the burnt dirt, hoping to take it back to the Loreseeker's guild. Hopefully Jigano would be pleased with him for taking the initiative to record this.

With his sample taken he sat back onto the grass and began to draw in his notebook, a simple drawing of the area (lacking any real skill, but he had begun to improve a little) and write notes of what he could see, along with questions and theories: Will grass ever grow here? or Will the barrier ever come back? Completely absorbed in his writings, he did not look up from his book for a long time.

here comes the sun
smiling down

A sharp whistle broke the silence, quickly followed by the barking of a dog and a sound of many running feet. In the space of a few seconds the peaceful area was covered in milling sheep, hell-bent on seeking greener pastures, and hot on their heels was a white dog that was equally determined to prevent this. With focused precision the dog gained on the sheep, began to round the outskirts of the flock and ever so gradually started to turn them around. More whistles directed the dog, closing in on the chaotic scene, and before long Maea came into view, hurrying towards the animals with her face flushed and eyes flashing in uncharacteristic vexation.

"I'm so sorry Sam, are you alright?" she called, mortified to find her friend in the middle of her wayward charges. "Bloody kids let their dog loose on my land and made the sheep panic... broke the fence and everything. I've been chasing them for hours."

The girl came up to the bookmaker and stopped, eyes still following the dog as it worked hard to bring the woolly animals under control. She was winded, face red and sweaty from running and the hair had half escaped the braid, hanging in long silken tresses about the neck. A far cry from lovely, unless one was into dirty and ragged, and next to her fellow Loreseeker Maea felt unkempt. A far cry too from the neat scholar she was supposed to be...

The book of love is long and boring
Sam jumped suddenly at the sound of the whistle, his pen jumping over the page and creating a line over the   drawing of the barrier he'd made. Before he could recover and look around to see who had interrupted his work he was surrounded by sheep, pushing past him and making him tense and lift up his shoulders as wool appeared on all sides brushing past his sleeves.

As he heard Maea's voice he tried to stand (wobbling a little from the still-regular pulse of sheep) and turned to see her. "Oh, um, it's...it's alright!" He tried to reassure his friend, his confusion and panic seeping away at the sight of the familiar face.

She looked about how you'd expect someone who been chasing sheep to look. Sam closed his book and put it back in his satchel, then watched the sheep around them. "Do you...want any help?" He wasn't sure how to help in this situation, but he'd found he wasn't too bad at physical work if he had good instruction.
