Oh, how differently their lives might have gone if they had known each other earlier in life. They would have been friends, Soh was certain, though of course she couldn't complain about where they had ended up. She wouldn't trade her relationship with Zavien for anything, and now that they had another life tying them inexplicably together, it felt like everything had worked out exactly as it had been meant to.
Zavien's sweet words made Soh's heart flutter in her chest, and she had just leaned closer as though to kiss him when the nurse called them back. The ensuing question and answer session was simultaneously too long and too short - surely there were more things they needed to check to ensure all was well? - but before long, they were waiting once more. "I don't know," she said. "Maybe not too long, since it's so early."
As if on cue, a light knock on the door preceded the doctor's entry. She was a short, petite woman with curly grey hair tied at the nape of her neck, round spectacles balanced on the end of her nose. Hi, mom! she greeted Soh warmly, her chipper attitude immediately setting the Luminary at ease. Surely she wouldn't be so happy if her answers to the nurse's questions had set off any red flags. And who have we brought with us today?
"This is my boyfriend - and the baby's father," Soh replied, glancing shyly over at Zavien and smiling affectionately. Well, hi, dad, the doctor replied, offering him a smile as well. For a few moments, the doctor went over various medical questions and answers, listened for the baby's heartbeat, and proclaimed that all seemed to be going well and that she had no concerns about Soh or the baby's health. At that news, Soh breathed a sigh of relief, her eyes finding Zavien's once more.
Now, the doctor said finally. Did we want to find out the baby's gender today, or are we hoping to be surprised?
