I just want one more chance
The question felt easy, felt safe - just someone trying to get to know another person, an innocent query into how she spent her time.
And yet, as Liam watched Wren's eyes fall to her empty coffee, noted the way her jaw feathered as she seemed to consider her response carefully, he was reminded that this was an interaction not unlike a complex dance. They each had their steps to take, without trampling on one another in the process, and he wasn't sure he hadn't just made his first misstep. But instead of offering a flippant response, or fleeing altogether, Wren seemed to center herself enough to offer up the truth.
Liam's breath caught in his throat as he weighed the moment, unsure whether to press forward or allow her to retain some semblance of stability. "That must be difficult," he said finally, voice a low rumble that didn't quite hide the pain threatening to break through his carefully polished facade. He paused, grip tightening on his own empty mug, knuckles whitening against the pale ceramic. "I lost my family in the Ascended attack," he revealed after a moment. "My wife... and my two daughters."
You, he wanted to say. I lost you.
But he didn't, couldn't - not when she was just starting to open up, to offer him something solid he could use to offer her a way forward. So instead of lingering on what - who - he'd lost, he forged on. "Would you want to recover your memories, if you could?" he asked, desperate for her to say yes and hoping that it didn't show in their hazel eyes.
