Marcus found the rabbit not far from the clearing. The hunt itself was quick, almost disappointingly so after the excitement of the chase through the Greatwood. Years of tracking with his parents had taught him how to move quietly when he needed to, and the animal never knew he was there until it was over. By the time he made his way back toward the Crimson Cataract, twilight had deepened into evening, the floating river glowing more vividly against the darkening sky. The crimson light painted the clearing in shifting shades of red and gold, turning the grass and trees into something dreamlike.
His footsteps slowed the moment he spotted Nova.
The rabbit hung forgotten for a moment at his side as he took in the sight of her curled in the grass. A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth despite himself. The fierce determination, the endless energy, the stubborn insistence that she was perfectly fine -- it had all finally lost the battle against a full day of running across the Greatwood. Now she looked younger somehow, tucked into herself beneath the oversized sweater dress. Every few moments a soft snore escaped her, and Marcus had to bite down on a laugh before it could wake her.
