Marcus glanced up at the sound of her stirring. The rabbit had nearly finished cooking, crackling softly over the fire while fat hissed and dripped into the flames. For a moment he just watched her emerge from sleep. Her hair had become an absolute disaster in the time she'd spent curled up in the grass, blonde and lavender curls sticking out in every direction. It was a far cry from the bright, unstoppable force that had raced him across the Greatwood all afternoon. Yet somehow, that only made him smile. "Rabbit." He said, the corners of his eys wrinkling.
When she settled beside him, close enough that her sweater brushed his arm, Marcus felt the contact immediately. The movement was innocent enough, born more from sleepiness than intention, but he found himself suddenly very aware of the warmth of her shoulder beside his. He cleared his throat quietly and focused on the rabbit rather than how her scent filled his nose and pushed away anything else. The crimson light from the Cataract danced overhead, mixing with the firelight to paint everything in shades of gold and red. Marcus pulled a knife free and carefully cut away one of the finished portions, offering it toward her before taking any for himself.
"Here, try it." His eyes flicked toward her wild curls again as he handed over the food and settled back beside the fire, content for the moment to listen to the crackle of the flames, the murmur of the floating river above them, and the reassuring sound of Nova awake again.
