I can appreciate the rare display of affection, smiling and shaking my head as Jack pulls away. For all his jokes about pieces’a him an’ not askin for much, I can’t shake a weird feelin’. I do manage to push it aside for a proper farewell, quickly pullin’ him in an’ throwin’ my arms around his neck for a tight hug. Nothin’ too long and lingering - more fierce and quick with a fuckton of unspoken subtext behind it.
“Have fun,” I reply, rather than be safe or anythin’ remotely motherly. The be safe part is always implied. But there’s no sense in sayin’ it. Wavin’ to his back, I turn an’ walk back down the dock, paper in hand. There are plenty’a things to keep my mind busy for the next couple’a weeks. An’ before I know it, they’ll be back.
