A sizzle. A spark, a light shine'in in the dark. A snap. A crizzACK, beads o' sweat drippin' down your back. Just a rubbin' and a sizzlin', and a spark'in and a light'in, and a fire so big that it's jus' gon' burn this whole big world to the ground, and oh! won't it be bee-YOU-tee-ful?

Like a conductor warming up the band, the flinthopper's legs twitched and extended, pulling in this way and that to find the perfect position with which to create its sweet, sweet song. Finding this spot easily (you didn't grow to be nearly the size of a large horse by making bad music, can I get an amen), it ran one leg against the other just as delicately as any violinist, creating a wavering note that rang out through the early morning stillness. With staccato pulses of an animated melody, sparks began to appear and fall onto the soil left horrifically dry by the lengthening of the days and the relentless sun.

The fire caught quick, just as the creature knew it would.

This is a rare creature sighting! It's a GIANT flinthopper! You have 24 hours to reply in order to have 'seen' the creature. After that point you can help deal with the aftermath but will not be able to count this towards your levelling.

The sound of a grasshopper song roused Patton from her sleep. Large dreary eyes blinking to adjust to the light coming into the hollow she had curled up in for the day. It was remarkably loud, but not completely unlike songs she'd heard before. And so, she dozed back to sleep. After all, what sensible owl would go out to hunt a grasshopper in the middle of the day? Only something large like a vole or a squirrel was even worth getting up for.

Fire on the other hand. Fire was a perfectly reasonable excuse to get out of the hollow. The smell of smoke awoke her the second time and heat rising from below pushed her out of the hollow. Her tree was on fire! The trees around her were on fire! What the hell...? Then her eyes landed on something horrifying and otherworldly. A grasshopper, at least it looked kind of like one, but it was massive. As large as a horse at least. Terrified eyes widened, but she wasn't frozen in fear long. She had to get out of here, escape.

Patton leapt of the branch as it caught alight, beating her wings against the hot air to gain speed. The flames licked at her feathers, enticing her, pulling her into their orange glow. She had to escape. She had to flee. She had to survive.

Oh well fuck this. Ronin had been jogging the Outskirts, as he did most mornings these days (and wouldn't Roana be proud that he could get almost all the way around now without taking a break!) when the flinthopper's song reached his ears. It was serene, beautiful almost, but in its wake followed the acrid stench of smoke.

That was what caught Ronin's attention in the end, the guildmaster panting and ruffling a hand through his sweat darkened hair as he fell to a halt just within the Woodlands. He could see the flinthopper - holy shit what the hell was it even - but more than that, he saw fire. Hissing a breath through his teeth, Ronin straightened up and lifted his fingers to his lips.

A shrill whistle pierced the air, at odds with the flinthopper's song, but the small, pale reptile which responded to it clearly found it perfectly in tune. Sugar screeched her reply, the young dragon not needing to come to Ronin to know his intention. She flew low, blasting at the flames with icy breath, and attempted to put them out.

MELITA
Melita always held an affinity for fire: maybe it was the Sun God’s intentions all along, to have his compatriots sizzle across the hot sand, the molten desert, and become their own infernos; maybe it was because it burned and scalded, destroyed and obliterated. But this, after she and Jigano had worked tirelessly on breaking apart flinthoppers in hopes that destruction wouldn’t be imminent, was difficult to savor.

She was lured into the forest by the song – curious, inquisitive, always a little too bold, she and Fangorn followed the nuances and noises, pondering over who or what could make such intriguing music. It could’ve been a siren swell for all they knew, high and glowing, serene and tranquil, luring them straight into a trap: except, when they finally made it to the designated area, the sight before her wasn’t tantalizing, tempting, or even the least bit enticing. Her eyes widened, her jaw dropped, and her breath inhaled sharply, only ending on an “Oh no,” and she stared into the abyss.

The flinthopper was enormous, far larger than any of the ones they’d trapped outside of Rory’s farm, along the intertwining fields of grass and wheat – much like a steed with its bulk and mass. This one wasn’t something they’d be able to catch and rip apart, and the damage was already done, it’s notes and melodies brimming chaos into the fold, catching upon the dried wood, crackling, popping, and sending it up in smoke. She could hear her companion hissing and growling, both uncertain what to do – they didn’t have anything water related nearby. Was there any sand? Water? A stream? A brook? And how were they going to get the liquid there, quickly enough?

Thank goodness for Ronin and the dragon – icy blasts unfurling over flames while the girl swallowed and leapt towards the demigod. Her voice was a determined shout, despite the trembling along her fingers and spine. “Is there anything else we can do?”
This is a gift, it comes with a price
Who is the lamb and who is the knife?
Midas is king and he holds me so tight
And turns me to gold in the sunlight

there’s a light that you give me when I’m in shadow
"Why..are we... running....again?" The alchemist breathlessly panted behind his friend, only to have his question dissolve into nothingness at the sight of the gigantic bug and the flames quickly engulfing the area.

"Does it ever end?" He whispered with a wry grin at Ronin 's side, his smile widening as Sugar did what she did best and began to blast the flames away. Glancing over his shoulder at Melita, Remi looked from her back to the creature, biting the inside of his lip.

Not necessarily keen to take on the creature (from all that he had heard so far it was merely doing what it was born and bred to do), Remi clutched at the dry earth. Pushing it apart he tried to reach down to where moisture still lingered a few feet beneath the surface and tried to extinguish the flames with the wet ground.

DEIMOS
And in your darkest hour,
I hold secrets flame
From one potential disaster to the next, Caido had its ways of mimicking other lands in their paramount methods to grant them hope and take it away quickly thereafter. The flinthopper’s song hadn’t been one of serenity or repose; but instinctual chaos, bringing the bestial man to the forefront of the burning woods by sheer curiosity, always drawn to bedlam. The fire didn’t resemble anything he actively encouraged, however, it wasn’t his father’s kindling embers and flames, it wasn’t the wake of a controlled bonfire, but the subject of a giant grasshopper’s meddling.

His eyes quickly took in the rest of the scene: ice dragons, shouting, birds flying, evading, intending to make their escape. Other individuals would likely follow the same tactic, but born straight from frays and sketched in the outline of resolve, determination, and unholy sedition, the irreverent pulse of his movements and motions gazed upon the sources of the fire, besides a flinty incitement, taking in the piles of broken wood, dried, eaten and devoured quickly, fervently. Huyana and his mother would’ve been a godsend here. But they weren’t amidst this plain – ghosts and wraiths – he’d have to assist without their watery influences.

Why not try and remove some of the ignition source? He wouldn’t be able to grab hold of actual trees and move them out of the way, but the fallen collection of bramble sitting there, waiting to be consumed and feed the flames, could be maneuvered, if he was fast enough. He summoned the briefest of his creation incantations, sparking over his hands in the glow of gloves, some minor protection in case the burning inferno ached to lance over his skin. Then he crouched, getting as close as he could to grab hold of discarded sticks, branches, and bramble, lifting them into his arms and carrying them to a safer distance, where they could make a far less impact, before returning again to resume the same pattern – while ice dragons worked, while others devised more plans.

The flames were catching her. Singeing the tips of her feathers with every stroke of her wings. She couldn't get away from them no matter how hard she tried. She could ascend through the canopy, the burning leaves created a halo of flame above. The underbrush kept her from flying too low, the fire reaching up like hands trying to grasp her, pull her into their hellish depths. So she was stuck in the in between, amongst the billowing smoke that choked her lungs and stung her eyes.

The smoke really was horrible. She felt blind flying through it, but she didn't have much choice. She just hated not being able to see where she was going. The glowing of burning trunks kept her from running into the trees, but other than that she was navigating blind. Through tear filled eyes, she couldn't make out much, and the roar of the flames made her deaf to voices not far ahead of her. As the smoke began to clear, she thought she had made it. Perhaps she had outran the flames and would be able to make it out of this, another close call that would become a distant memory. That was until a large form loomed over her.

A giant serpent, flying above. Patton had never seen anything like it, and her heart dropped. As the beast opened it's mouth, a stream of ice erupted forth, aiming directly at the growing fire, and subsequently the young owl. She tried to dive out of the way, but she wasn't fast enough. The dark owl screeched as she felt her wings ice over. Flying in a blizzard didn't work. Why? Because you can't fly with iced wings. The weight makes it impossible to get lift and the stiffening means you can't flap to compensate. She was going down, and she was going down hard.

The owl flailed, feathers singed and covered in ice. She couldn't even aim herself, but she tried to glide somewhat. She managed to burst through the fire front. Thank the gods she wasn't going to land in the fire! But she had no idea the group had gathered, and she was headed straight for a tall bearded man with long dark hair. Patton screeched as she pummeled into his chest, unable to stop herself or steer clear. The collision caused her to forcefully pop into her human form, but she was too cold and too burnt to really care. However having a woman land on you at full speed rather than a small owl would probably be surprising.

Are
Fire.

Fire?

Fire!

But instead of running away he ran towards the newborn flames he could see just beyond the hill. Almost forgetting the axe in the process, but yanking it out of the logs end grain didn't slow the cobbler warrior down much. The heavy leather gambeson he insisted on wearing on his outings paired with the round shield on the other hand. Maybe not slow him down but had him a panting sweating mess before the creature and small gathering came into clear view.

By the gods... he whispered under his breath at the scene. Fire and frost meeting and in he middle of it a simple insect large enough to devour a man whole. The scene took him a few moments to take in, to let the awe pass and fear to take hold. Fear was good though, kept one sharp, and most importantly; alive.

Just as the golem was faced with little thought he bore his arms and went charging down the hill towards the fire-making monster. "I came as fast as I could!" he shouted as he closed in on the gathering of people dealing with the flames caught on the dry land. "How in high Hel do we kill it!?" Are shouted, mostly at Remi but looking around at faces both slightly familiar and completely new.

EDREI
happy ending? sorry this isn't disney.
"Hey asshole—" Said a casually confident voice from somewhere behind the fray. Edy didn't run. She didn't really give a shit what got damaged in the process and she wasn't a hero either. What she was, occasionally, was a show off. What she was more often than not though, was more of a fire-bug than this giant flint-fucker could ever hope to be.

"—fire's kinda my thing." Edy purred, reaching out her hands and making a grabbing motion, as if the flames were something more tangible that she could actually grip onto.

And in fact, they were.

With all of her mastered-magical strength, Edy heaved at the flames that the flinthopper had produced, trying to smash them into a ball that she could more easily control. Watching as Sugar began to blow on them, Edy shot an amused grin towards Ronin. "Oy, Cap, quit ruining the fun." She said with a cackle.

A M A L I A

Fire.

It is a standard thing, a right of passage, the fires which roar and wreck through LongHeat, leaving scorched earth in their wake. Every year they bloom anew, flowers of red in the dusty grass, waves of heat wafting through the once-confined ground, the crackling of kindling beneath the sound of flint-hoppers dancing and chirping in the night.

Amalia watches from a distance, wary but accepting of this natural event. It is the Outlanders who crowd around, one after another in panic and alarm. And they are not wrong to do so: the fire is massive, and closer to farmland than she would have liked, but nothing yet oppressive, nothing to cause havoc. Besides, there are systems in place to protect the farms, old and careful planning by naturals who have lived through years of disasters and overcome. The girl has never been part of the fire brigade, lacking any ability to help contain the heat. But she has some medical skills, some little bit of knowledge forced down by an obstinate mother; and so she stands at the side of the scene, watching and waiting to see to burns.

It is Deimos which springs her into action, makes her heart rise in her throat as he walks into the flame. Deimos, who is brave and noble without asking for repayment; Deimos, who would burn himself to save the world but never feel owed. Amalia watches his great form kneel, taking debris into his hands, dangerous and daring (and incredibly dashing), the one thing she cannot bear to see go up in the blaze. First walking, then jogging, she hurries toward him, terrified that he will be wounded, images of burnt flesh and singed hair filling her mind. "Deimos-!" she begins to call-

And then there is a girl against him, crashing into his massive chest, on top of him, touching him, and she feels a screech of jealousy flare in her black heart.

She does not see the fire fading. She does not see the crowd. She sees him - them - and even as she kneels beside them she can sense their closeness, is aware of the fact that this person is holding him, touching him, and worst, perhaps, hurting him-!

Amalia is kind. Amalia is good. Amalia is an insecure child generous to others, and so she pushes her doubts aside, reaching in her bag for salves as the fire rages on. "Are you okay?" the baker asks, her dark eyes fluttering concernedly over Deimos. She wants to throw herself at him, to take him and touch every inch and be certain he is safe, unharmed, to kiss his wounds and stroke his face and relish in his boldness. Instead she swallows and turns back to the stranger, ready to tend to injuries, to apply and heal and help as she can - and gently but firmly easing her toward the ground, away from the roaring clouds of smoke.

Jigano was not a morning person at the best of times.

He had more options for places to spend the night now, at least, and drifted between them as need and desire drew him to each in turn. His den in the Glade was still his first and fondest home, though, the old badger holt plenty large enough for a fox and his gryphlet, especially since most of his gear and items had been moved to the Guildhall for safe-keeping and the den was now a place of simple comfort.

He might have slept right through the excitement if Ronin's piercing whistle hadn't split the air, sending his head up so fast his ears flattened against the roof of dirt above him. There was shouting, and music and clearly there was something going on, something exciting - and potentially threatening his comfortable little home.

The fox slipped outside with Isuma at his heels, the gryphlet perky in spite of her companion's groggy grumpiness. The scent of smoke on the morning breeze was unmistakeable as the sun started sending its first golden rays across the land, but they hadn't been what set the distant blaze. No, the music sent shivers of familiar dread through him as he raced across the loam, passing from Glade to Woodland and following his nose and ears alike as he neared the source of the bedlam. He shifted on the run, suspecting hands would be more useful for fighting the thick smoke that had to have its source in deadly fire and preferring to make his change without an audience as Isuma bounded up to a fallen log and from there to his shoulder.

The scene was purest chaos by the time he reached it, with Edrei at its center, cool as a cucumber as she saucily snuffed the flames and sassed the... giant... flinthopper?! Well. That was terrifying on levels he hadn't experienced since leaving his world behind. The face alone was built from nightmares, even before the flames it sparked in the dry underbrush and the haunting melody of destruction it played upon its stony violin. Ronin and Sugar, Remi and Are, bright Melita, Deimos and dear Amalia, and... someone he didn't recognize, but who was in bad shape from the looks of it. Amalia had the situation well in hand, however, already tending to the pair, and Jigano felt a swell of pride for his friend, his family, his fellow loreseeker.

There was not much he could do to improve that situation, or the contained blaze, so he headed over to Ronin and nodded at the oversized fire hazard with a raised brow. "Looks like a job of the Monster Hunter's Guild," he said with a wry grin. "The loreseekers are at your disposal on this one, Guildmaster, if there's any help we can lend."
Only simple tables without images or background colors when threading, please. It's much appreciated!

Sugar's flames stopped short the fire beginning to lick up the tree that Patton had previously been in. Luckily though the owl had already vacated the bough. Further earth moved by Remi dampened some of the flames, but of course the entire world was basically a large tinderbox at the moment, and so even though he'd snuffed out one small space of it, the rest would just burn, baby burn. Indeed as Deimos cleverly fashioned a way to move what was quickly just becoming kindling, the flames continued to roar and race around him. One of the sticks that he grabbed had caught flame, and had it not been for Patton knocking into him and sending it flying, he might have been severely burned. This action though caused a new line of fire to roar into existence as what was now a torch fell from the Reaper and onto the ground. Soon Amalia, Deimos, and Patton would be entirely surrounded by a wall of fire.

Edrei 's magic meanwhile, began to pull the main fire into a tight ball. Though it stopped it from spreading, the licking and lapping flames now began to catch on the still-dry leaves in the trees and the small branches that protruded all around her.

For now the fire burns fairly clean, though thick plumes of white smoke do begin to pour upwards as green boughs eventually begin to burn.

Its work done, the Flinthopper leaps high up, long and light legs catching on the boughs of the trees to spring higher still, bounding over the canopy and then gliding away to wreak havoc somewhere new.

Patton, Ronin, Melita, Remi, Deimos, Are, Edrei, Amalia, and Jigano may all count this as a rare animal sighting. Feel free to join this thread, but the Flinthopper has now fled! The fire is still burning though!

Organised chaos - of course it was. What else had Ronin expected it to be? Scoffing to Remi - it never ended, and his friend ought to know as much! - the guildmaster left him to his own devices, knowing that the alchemist was hardly in need of babysitting. And their efforts seemed to work - sort of - though not without cost. "If you think it's so fun, I'll send it to live with you!" he called out to Edrei, snorting and shaking his head at the young Launceleyn.

But then Sugar's attempts to put out the flames had seemingly hit a casualty, and Ronin felt guilt and panic coil in his gut instantly. That was perhaps why Sugar swooped back to perch on his outstretched hand (he winced, not having brought along his gauntlet to what was meant to be an uneventful run), the dragonet trilling her apologies to the small woman who had crashed into Deimos. But Amalia was already on it, and damn but the fire was growing.

And the flinthopper was... gone?

"Ugh. Not today I'm afraid," he said quickly to Jigano, sending Sugar back up to redouble her efforts on the boughs of the topmost trees where the fire climbed. "We need to stop this. I'll do my best with the flames higher up, but Remi might need help."

there's a bulletproof bond
"ISLA—" Remi called out, his voice strained with the magical effort he was trying to maintain. Through the trees the darkened unicorn appeared. Instantly she trotted to Amalia 's side, nosing the baker gently to inform the Attuned of her presence and to lend a magical hand (hoof) at healing, if the baker needed it.

"Edrei, pull the fire away—" The alchemist called, seeing the way the great burning ball of fire was still alighting the higher branches. Dropping the earth where it was, Remi instead reached up towards the branches trying to part and pull them away from Edy's controlled-orb of destruction.
