Deimos couldn’t deny he was a judgmental figure. It had come from youth and war, when one had to scrutinize, analyze, and critique the surroundings, one’s opponent, quickly and effortlessly. Chosen wrong, it could mean death. Chosen correctly, it could mean survival. With so many other variables in between, and a wide expanse of individuals who’d donned adversarial armor and unfurled components of battle, it’d been sewn into his flesh and blood and soul – to perceive swiftly, or be caught in the aftermath. So perhaps when others were foolish against monsters he furrowed his brows and released his irritation. When some placed themselves in unnecessary danger, he pushed back. Those unwilling to try were ignored.

But not when someone wanted to learn.

He drew silent again when she gave a crisp, dry tone, and he shook his head, uncertain whether or not that meant complying with the advice, or shrugging it off entirely. Some part of him wanted to simply leave her be, and the other portion could see her trying to work through some unseen multitudes. Pride, maybe. He didn’t know enough about her to warrant much else, and she didn’t give him much room to try.

Instead, there was a flurry of assaults from beyond, and he watched as some lightning curved into the broad side of the ursur’s back. He solidified the ice again, like a fresh glaze and sheen, only for Nina to follow up with a hit to the chest. It scorched and left a mark, a deepening wound that, had the thing actually been alive, would’ve been a damaging and painful blow. He left the mark gaping, so she could see how it depleted motion. “Good,” he offered, as another barrage of air came casting through, trying to out maneuver the Warden’s own methods. Snorting, he pulled it back immediately from the clutches of one of the pupil’s, overpowering instantly, but that meant it was now closer to Nina. “Try to hit somewhere else.”
