Nobody reads a mystery to get to the middle.
Her eyebrows raise high, her attention now fully fixed on Kai. "You do?" Would she have to fight her mom? Could she fight her mom? Knell doesn't particularly like the idea of hurting her, let alone 'kick her ass' - not that she thinks she could.
Eyes following his finger like a cat with a laser pointer, the spade tip of her tail flicks subconsciously, captivated by the story he strings. Some of it doesn't make sense to her growing mind, but she picks at what kernels of information she can, gathering that his dad had done something wrong (having to do with his mom?) and that he'd 'talked some sense into him.' She wants to ask how that's 'kicking his ass,' but when her mouth opens to ask, he dangles a new mystery in front of her like a feather on a stick.
Knell tilts her head before giving a single shake, faintly recalling 'Family' being on the cover of a book in the Temple. It hadn't seemed interesting at the time - what more does she need to know about her family? - but as Kai talks more about the space invaders, the more she's intrigued. Her mom hadn't yet mentioned them between lessons on hunting, reading, and worshipping Dygra; although Knell will absolutely be asking about them when she gets home. Unless Kai can satiate her cavernous curiosity now.
"What were they like?" The quiet voice is bright with excitement, mouth nearly salivating with the need to know, the world around them turning fuzzy in her peripheral. Like a cat with catnip, she's immediately obsessed.
The chicken smells good, grabbing her attention back. She lifts on her toes to peek over the top of the stall where the crunchy, golden chicken steams, her stomach making a low growl that she investigates with a tiny hand to her belly. It only turns louder when they talk of making brownies (ice cream soup was quickly dismissed in her mind). Knell grins, the expression all toothy and eager. "Okay! Can I be the mixer?"

Knell
They read it to get to the end.
