The journey to the shrine was not a long one, but in Halo even short distances could feel transformed beneath weather like this. Freezing rain whispered against Noah’s thick fur, gathering in beads along his coat. In his polar bear form, the cold barely registered, but he found himself glancing back occasionally to ensure Lyra was keeping pace, a quiet habit of vigilance he seemed incapable of shedding.

The shrine sat tucked into a natural alcove that offered shelter from the worst of Halo’s relentless winds. As they approached, Noah slowed. The shrine rose from the forest floor like a fragment of starlight given form, its pale stone glowing warmly beneath the filtered sunlight that slipped through the towering pines. Noah’s gaze lingered on the gilded star crowning the archway, bright and unwavering against the sky, before drifting downward to the fountain nestled at its heart. Water spilled endlessly from tier to tier, each silver stream catching the light like liquid constellations. Flowers softened the stonework, their colors blooming around the shrine as though nature itself had chosen to offer devotion. Noah shifted back to human form at the shrine’s edge, his breath curling white into the air.

For a moment he simply stood there, looking at it, rain pattering on his cloak's hood. "I wanted it to feel like her." He regarded, looking from the shrine to the first responder. "Like a place someone could come when they needed guidance and leave feeling seen."

Noah's vigilance is noted by the dog trotting alongside, though she elects to say nothing about it. If anything, she appreciates the lengths that it seemed the man is willing to go to in order to keep his companions safe. For her part, she feels quite comfortable, even in the icy weather, even in the wilds of Halo, because she knows, deep in her bones, that Noah will not allow any harm to befall her.

The shrine, when they arrive, rises from the forest floor, tucked into a little alcove that protects them from the worst of the weather. A gilded star crowns an archway that frames a fountain at the heart of the shrine, water spilling in tiers through flowers that soften the stonework and bring a hint of color into a space otherwise dominated by greys and silvers and golds.

It's beautiful.

Lyra shifts; as a human once more, she tucks an errant strand of hair behind her ear. "I think you've accomplished that," she says softly, gaze fixed on the shrine. "It feels... personal. I can tell how much effort you've devoted." It's in the careful placement of the stones, the polish of the gilded star, the intention in the chosen colors of blooms. It bleeds from the very air, and Lyra feels suddenly blessed to have simply been invited to visit.

Noah stood quietly beside her as she took in the shrine, the freezing rain reduced to little more than a distant murmur beneath the sheltering pines. Water continued its endless song through the fountain's tiers, the gentle cascade threading through the silence between them like a prayer spoken too softly for words. At her praise, he felt something stir in his chest—a warmth that had nothing to do with the cloak wrapped around his shoulders, whos hood he was thankful for as he felt color embrace his ears.

His glacier eyes traced familiar details of the shrine: the curve of the arch, the star that crowned it, the flowers that divinely thrived despite Halo's harsh temperament. Building it had taken weeks of labor, countless trips through snow and forest, and more than one evening spent questioning whether he was capable of creating something worthy of the goddess it honored. For Noah, Safrin had never felt distant. She had been present through triumph and failure alike, through joy and grief, through moments when faith came easily and moments when it felt as fragile as ice stretched over dark water. This shrine had become more than stone and flowers during its construction. It had become gratitude made tangible.

"I think that's why I built it," he said after a moment, his voice low as he took a sideways step towards Lyra, "not because she needed it." A faint smile touched his lips as he glanced toward Lyra, rain rolling off the front of his cloak hood. "But sometimes people need somewhere to bring their faith. Somewhere to leave their burdens for a little while." His eyes returned to the shrine, breath coming through his nose. "I know I did."

The gentle flow of water from the shrine's tiers drowns out the distant sound of freezing rain against the pines as Lyra takes it all in. She doesn't look at Noah; she doesn't need to. She can feel a certain gratitude radiating off him in waves, and she takes it in stride, not wishing to disturb the peace of the moment by glancing his way. Instead, she takes in the shrine again, eyes ghosting over each and every carefully-placed detail, caressing every stone and flower.

It isn't until Noah speaks that Lyra's gaze flicks over to him, surprised to find him taking a small step in her direction. "Sometimes I think that's why we build shrines at all," she admits quietly. "Not because the gods need them. They exist with or without us, and we could worship them anywhere we choose." She reaches out, fingers brushing one particularly bright flower with something between reverence and affection. "I think we need shrines far more than the gods do. So that we have somewhere to bring our faith that feels as special as the gods do." Lowering her hand, she smiles up at Noah. "This place feels -" Like home, she might have said. Like you, she considered. "- right."
