Appearance
Matéo always took after his mother's side of the family. Thick, dark brown hair curls to frame his face and while he attempted to keep his appearance reasonably clean, after his wife's death he's leaned into more of the unkempt territory with constant five o'clock shadow and hair that hasn't seen a razor in more than a few months. His crooked smile is rare but not impossible when paired with dark eyes full of possibility and too much sorrow for one at his age. Though in Caido, who hadn't suffered more than they deserved?
The smell of the sea clings to his clothes no matter how many washings, though alcohol stains are beginning to make themself at home on his tattered belongings. If not for his constant presence in the market as a vendor, he could be mistaken as one of the many drunkards that made a home in Torchline. Though with his constant presence at The Hanged Man, the assumption wouldn't be too far off.
Personality
Matéo had once been called a happy child, singing with his mother while they worked around the house or visited the market. He would hold her hand and sing at the top of his lungs to songs he barely knew. His mother would laugh and laugh, telling his father about it over a meager dinner, and laughing again. But times had changed and after the passing of his parents and the unfortunate end to his marriage. Once bright, and arguably witty, Matéo has retreated inside of himself. It does him no favors when it comes to sales at the market, his gruff behavior driving away more than not, but he can't bring himself to care as long as it pays for his next drink.
History
Matéo was born and raised in Torchline. He's always kept his head down and to himself, doing what work needed to be done to keep himself alive, though he loved to hear tales from all walks of life within the diverse community Haulauni had created. Inheriting a seaside cabin further from insert city name here only sealed his fate as a fisherman and dashed any dreams of creating his own whirlwind worthy life story.
His childhood sweetheart turned wife, Marcella (Marcy, as he'd call her when tucking her frail body into bed each night), saw to the sale side of the family business, preferring her time in town than in their ocean misted cabin where she claimed that the sea salt made her bones ache. There had never been much love between them after their first year together, married at only seventeen, and stumbling into the transition to adulthood together. For ten years they worked and lived in relative harmony despite no love in their relationship, seeing one another only during the late hours of the night or hours before the sun had risen, to fulfill his husbandly duty to her as she demanded before returning to his small boat with a bottle of whiskey and a haphazard net in hand. He had tried to please her, make a good home for them both, but children had never been something he wanted, nor did he expect the struggle when it came to undressing his wife when she requested. She would tell him of the strapping young men that worked the docks by the city and though he could only reply with a hum of acknowledgment, there was no denying the interest sparked.
It was only after one of his rare trips to town that involved the brothel and a few glasses of liquid courage that he proposed divorce before returning to his first love, the Sea. Upon returning home, Marcella was nowhere to be found. Desperate to find his wife in the face of their latest disagreement, Matéo was met with her broken body laying by the precarious rock formations below their abode.
Believing her death to be his fault, Matéo threw his whole self into fishing. His days were filled with bringing his morning catch to market, retiring at The Hanged Man, and repeating it all the next day. He didn't think much of it or the politics around him, as long as he had a place to lay his head in his house by the sea.
