When hope and peace begin to fray
Evie has to physically press her tongue lightly into her teeth so her heart doesn’t try to wedge past with the instinct to say, Sam would have loved you. Evie is less scholar and more environmental scientist, but seeing Amhran learning and making connections makes her appreciate something she’d always envied in her twin. As baby and man mimic Deimos’ silent display she takes the moment to twist her fingers together in her lap, squeezing tightly for a moment to shake off grief that never really dies. All she can do is try to foster that inquisitiveness this time around instead of belittling it.
The swift sounds of digestion brings her back, which means she doesn’t laugh quite so openly at Amhran’s big eyes and immediate concern. “It is, your body will do that to signal when it needs to eat, but also will make noise if you eat something after a long time of nothing. So keep an ear out for it as you get used to what the other signs of hunger look like, okay?” He can’t afford to lose much weight honestly.
She’s not very hungry herself given the whirlwind of the past - gods has it even been more than two hours? - so Evie nibbles on a slice of apple as she looks out over the three boys clustered around the charcuterie board. Her heart aches with fullness. Thank you, Rae.
