Appearance
Overall, Zariah looks a lot younger than she is, frequently being mistaken for sixteen or younger. Zariah is rather tall, though being so is a trait associated with those of the Launceleyn family. Her figure is distinctly feminine, but more of the “Amazonian” variety. Her shoulders are broad and her overall frame lean and athletic. She could easily be mistaken for someone capable in the way of any variety of weaponry – though her strength more stems from general training than anything else She general has a rather blank expression that most misinterpret for a scowl. Her hair is long, thick, curly and generally unruly, so it isn't uncommon for her to tie it back.
Personality
Zariah is not the most personable young woman you’ll ever meet. She is quiet, and a bit socially awkward. Not in the sense that she is uncomfortable with people, but some of the basic pleasantries of society are not ones to which she adheres. If you ask her how her day is, she will tell you how it really is. If you ask her if you look fat in this dress, well, let’s just hope that you don’t. Some misconstrue this as being purposefully hurtful, but she simply doesn’t sugar coat the truth for the sake of another’s ego – this stems from growing up with a very limited group of people who were equally truthful to the point of insult.
In fact, Zariah is actually a very warm-hearted, loyal person. She loves and cares deeply. If she likes you and trusts you, you’ve attained an ally for life. Just don’t expect her to get all sentimental about it. Showing the “softer” emotions makes her incredibly uncomfortable. If she gives you a personal compliment, take it with the same appreciation as if someone wrote you a love poem: that’s about as close as you’re going to get with her.
On the flipside, it is best not to get on her bad side. Her temperament is short and her idea of punishment harsh. She has a rather narrow world view, which of course is subject to change, but for now makes it difficult for her to see beyond that with which she was raised.
History
The Launceleyn family-clan has been shrouded in mystery for the entirety of Northwinder history. The entire clan lives within a large compound, surrounded by high, thick walls with only one visible entrance – though it is rumored that there is an elaborate tunnel system beneath connecting it to the rest of the Northwinder territory. Those who enter almost never emerge again, with very few exceptions. Inside, what goes on is completely unknown. Some speculate there are great technologies, left unshared with the rest of the world. Some guess the Launceleyn’s have a mini-kingdom of their own. Others think it is literally the entrance to hell. Really, it is anyone’s guess. And should you happen upon a Launceleyn to ask, you’ll likely end up disappointed in your lack of an answer.
However, what is known is this: this family produces some of the strongest elemental destruction users in the Northwinder kingdom. They are selective in their marriage practices to increase the likelihood of a magic-using child. To be asked to marry into the family is an honor of the upmost degree. It does come with a catch: removing oneself entirely from their own family to join the clan. Only those of particular interest to the powers that be within the family are ever allowed to remain in seldom contact with their own families.
But why would the King allow for such secrecy right under his own nose? Even he has never stepped foot within the compound, nor is he any more aware of the goings on than anyone else in the kingdom. The answer is quite simple – the family’s loyalty outweighs the mystery. Without fail, the Launceleyns send to the King their most powerful and adept elemental users. Masters of one of the four elements, their powers are terrifying and without question a weapon worth the cost of unsatisfied curiosity. The elementals produced by the Launceleyns are best compared to Spartans when it comes right down to it, though wielding magic instead of spears.
It is from this family that Zariah hails. She is a young destruction user of incredible skill. Her preference is for fire, but like all her family members she is skilled in using any element for destruction purposes. Though untrained in hand-to-hand combat, her magical prowess with the elements is unheard of for someone of her age, but a product of the grueling, methodical, and frankly down-right abusive training she has endured since before she could remember. You see, the Launceleyn family submits children at the age of 1 to a variety of painful tests to bring forth any signs of magical talent. Those with are immediately enrolled in a regimented training program. Those without are placed lower in the familial hierarchy and support the family through labor intensive work.
As a female, her training was double: first and foremost to hone her elemental destruction abilities, second to strengthen her body in preparation for child bearing. However, Zariah’s life course has veered slightly from that of the average Launceleyn girl. Given her age, and the purpose intended for the second wave of Northwinders to the settlement, Zariah was “voluntold” by the family to go to the Settlement. Despite not yet being a master of her magic, her magical prowess was exceptional even by the family’s standards, and would be of use to the Settlement. Additionally, she is tasked with laying the roots of the new family line within this new Settlement. It wasn’t her choice to come, but she did so out of a sense of duty.
Though she isn’t entirely alone. Technically she is related to a fellow by the name of Grey Lincolnshire. Her brother married his eldest sister, who was chosen for her ability to use of the rare magical types. She is one of the few outsiders allowed to visit her family – it was a bargaining chip the Launceleyns were willing to part with in order to introduce her magical prowess into the bloodline. That being said, Zariah has never actually met Grey, just heard his name in stories. And frankly, she isn’t sure if Grey knows who she is, as her sister-in-law is under a strict gag rule: only certain topics are acceptable to discuss outside the walls of the compound. Talk about awkward.
She has since put her skills to work in a variety of ways. First and foremost she has joined the Storm Guard, to use her magical abilities to maintain the security of the people. Secondly, she has used her abilities with fire to transform iron to steel, so the settlers could make stronger, more reliable weapons and tools (at a steep cost of course), as well as fashioning more luxury type items from metal to appeal to the ladyfolk and high class. Finally, she has recently begun attending the magic school, in pursuit of mastering her element.
